Recent Acquisitions 2010 Rudbeck, Olaus.Disputatio Anatomica, de Circulatione Sanguinis...Västerås, Eucharius Lauringerus, 1652. This book is the extremely rare first edition of the first publication by Olaus Rudbeck, in which he introduces Harvey’s theory of the circulation of the blood to the Swedish academicians. In this dissertation Rudbeck presents twenty-six theses, one of which denies the role of the liver as the organ for formation of the blood. This work was published in a very small number of copies and is among the great rarities of medical literature. Rudbeck is also known as the discoverer of the thoracic duct and lymphatic system, a discovery made while investigating the circulatory system. Hugo Wilhelm Arthur Nahl (1833-1889) and his half-brother Charles Christian Nahl (1818-1878) belonged to an artistic family. Both studied art in Germany and then in Paris. However, because of the political unrest, they emigrated to the United States in 1849. Two years later, the family moved to California in search of gold. After working for a short time in the gold mines, the brothers returned to art and established a studio in Sacramento. After a fire in 1852, the brothers moved to San Francisco and opened another studio where they became very successful commercial artists, portrait painters, and engravers. Sharing an enthusiasm for physical fitness, the brothers set up a gymnasium in the backyard of their home which became a popular gathering place for other gymnastic and bodybuilding enthusiasts. In 1860 this group became the Olympic Club, the oldest athletic club in the United States. The Nahls’ photographic and art business was very successful and both are very important early California artists. In this book which is dedicated to the Olympic Club, the Nahls discuss the importance of regular exercise. The book is divided into sections describing exercises done on the ground, exercises with movable implements such as barbells, exercises with apparatus and fixed implements such as rings, construction of pyramids, and acrobatics. Fifty-three engraved plates accompany the text. The authors also include instructions on how to build the various pieces of equipment. This book was prepared and printed by the Delaware, Lackawanna, and Western Railroad Company to present the hazards of mining and make miners more familiar with safe methods of mining. In addition, the book was intended to familiarize the non-English speaking miners with the basics of the English language so that they could better understand the rules of safety and protect themselves from the dangers of the mine. Title page of Mine Accidents and Their Prevention The situations presented in the photographs were taken from the annual reports of the Department of Mines of Pennsylvania and were selected because they represented the accidents that occurred most frequently and resulted in the highest incidence of injury and loss of life. For each situation two sets of photographs are presented. The first set shows the accident, and the second set shows how the accident can be avoided.
